Coming up with Halloween-themed food to serve at a costume party usually falls into one of two categories: Cutesy sugar-bombs that leave you craving anything salty (even a swig straight from the shaker), or so macabre you lose your appetite the second you see them (severed finger hot dogs shouldn't be a thing, people!).

This app defies both of those categories. Sure, it hits on so-adorable-it-must-be-Instagrammed territory, but it's also a genuinely awesome, gooey, savory, cheesy dish that can offset all of the handfuls of sugar you're inevitably downing all night long.

Making it is so easy a five-year-old could do it. In fact, if you have a five-year-old, or you've got a relative who's always asking you to babysit, put those nimble little fingers to work! You're just cutting puff pastry into half-inch strips—use a butter knife, or better yet, take care of that part yourself—then wrangle a kid or get your craft on to wrap the brie in puff pastry strips yourself, leaving a space for the eyes. We used mini pepperoni and olive slices, but you could substitute whatever you have in your pantry. M&Ms? Sure, if you want a sweet twist. Pickle slices? Go for it. SweeTarts? Eh, maybe rein it in a bit. But you get what we mean here.

From there, you just brush the pastry with a beaten egg and bake it until the pastry's golden, about 20 minutes. Then try to hold people back long enough to snap a photo—or keep them from burning their fingers—as they rush to dig in. The struggle is real.
