It's all about the crust. Choose a hearty bread, butter it up, and shred your favorite cheddar for the best grilled cheese ever: crispy-crunchy on the outside, melty, cheddar middle, and the world's most impressive cheese pull.
What cheese is best for a grilled cheese?
A grilled cheese is only as good as the cheese used for it. You want to make sure you're using a melty cheese like American, cheddar, pepper jack, havarti, gruyere, and Monterey Jack. Look for low moisture cheese when picking as they melt the best. Shredded cheese will also melt more quickly than a slices and create a better cheese pull for optimal effect. Just make sure to shred the cheese yourself rather than buying pre-shredded cheese. Pre-shredded has additives to keep it from melting so it's not ideal for your best grilled cheese.
Should I use mayo or butter on grilled cheese?
Mayo vs. butter: the great debate! Our classic grilled cheese keeps the tradition of using softened butter to coat the outside of the sandwich. Mayo and butter both work great for getting and extra crispy exterior. Mayonnaise adds an extra layer of creaminess and saltiness. A tip we love is to use salted butter for your grilled cheese if you don't want to use mayonnaise.
What can I add to a grilled cheese?
The best part about a grilled cheese is you can add anything to it. Bacon or ham are great additions. You can add some apples and jam with brie for a sweeter grilled cheese. Or make an antipasto grilled cheese for something more unique.
What bread is best for a grilled cheese?
Really any bread works well in a grilled cheese. We prefer a slice of bread that isn't too thick so that the whole thing feels crispy. We love a sourdough slice, white bread, and even brioche.
